Crazy Little Thing Called Love

1 John 4:8 (NIV)

Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.

The term love is so nuanced, nebulous and amorphous that most people would give it a subjective definition. This is because there are several types of natural love, and each has its place within the correct context.

But the love I am referring to is supernatural, love not of this world. This love is divine, and it comes from God.

This love is dependent upon the one doing the loving (the lover) and not the one being loved (the lovee). This divine love is the love God expects His children to demonstrate to a lost and hate-filled world. That is because God poured out His divine love into our hearts (Romans5:5). This love gives us the internal confirmation we are loved and accepted by God. When we personify this love to an unloved world, unbelievers see that God is real. Christ demonstrated this love, by His sacrificial death on the cross (Romans5:8).

Jesus said to love your enemies. This is because divine love can defeat hatred and make friends out of enemies. Divine love never fails. I call this divine love crazy love because this love has no rationale for loving, only obedience to God's command.
